Scalp Micropigmentation, or more commonly referred to as SMP, is a non-invasive treatment that uses micro-needles to deposit pigment into the dermal layer of the scalp. The results replicate the natural appearance of real hair follicles in the desired treatment area. Scalp Micropigmentation can be utilized to achieve the look of a cropped buzz cut, adding density to thinning hair, and scar cover up. The
Scalp Micropigmentation is an effective procedure for correcting different levels of hair loss, ranging from camouflaging pattern baldness to adding density. When administered by a trained and licensed professional, SMP can seamlessly blend into any stage of pattern baldness, creating an undetectable result. For those who suffer from pattern baldness, receding hairline, alopecia, thinning hair or hair transplant scars, we can help.
Yes! SMP is gaining popularity among women who are concerned with thinning hair and hair loss. Typically female pattern baldness is different from male pattern baldness. In women, the hair tends to thin evenly over the entire scalp and the frontal hairline stays in tact. When a woman experiences hair loss it is highlighted by the contrast between the hair and the scalp. The goal with SMP for women is to decrease and camouflage this contrast and create the appearance of a fuller, more dense head of hair by layering pigment on the scalp.
While most patients don’t find SMP to be overly painful, there is some level of pain and discomfort felt during the procedure. Because pain tolerance is subjective, it’s difficult to predict in advance how much discomfort a particular individual will experience during the procedure. Some would describe it as a painful process, while others report that the pain level to be mild. As with general tattooing, there are areas of the scalp that are a little more painful than others to treat. These typically include the temples and the skin just above the ears. If you find the pain intolerable, we do offer numbing cream to ease the pain.
The first session typically ranges between 2-4 hours, with the second session typically taking less time at 2-3 hours. The duration varies depending on what application and level of coverage is desired.
In order to achieve optimal results most clients can expect 2-3 sessions with a touch up about a month after the final session.
The skin needs time to heal between sessions in order to provide the best results. The optimal time to wait between sessions is 14 days, which allows our clients to finish a 3 session procedure within 1 month. After you have completed 2-3 sessions, we ask you return within 1-2 months max, for a touch up.
Scalp Micropigmentation is a permanent tattoo, however the ink does not penetrate the skin as deep as a traditional tattoo. After completion of your treatment you can expect the strength of the pigment to last for many years. Over time, mild fading of the pigmentation is expected at one rate or another and will vary between individuals. On average we recommend returning for a brief touch up after 5-7 years. Fading will vary between individuals depending on skin type, skin condition, and general maintenance. There are a few things you can do to prolong your SMP results such as moisturizing the scalp daily, protecting the scalp from UV rays with sunscreen or a hat, and avoiding contact to harsh chemicals or alcohols on the scalp.
Women do not need to shave their head to receive an SMP treatment. The technician works through the scalp by repeatedly parting the hair section by section and applying pigment to the scalp.
We do ask men to shave their hair as short as possible. This allows the treatment to blend seamlessly into the existing hair. We suggest shaving your head with trimmers on the closest setting.
